    “A cold of the soul” was the poetic term used by a 1990s Japanese advertising campaign to introduce the concept that depression is an illness. Since then, many cultures have accepted that mood disorders are biological, yet we still do not test for, diagnose, or treat these diseases the same way as other chronic health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.
